What the New Fast Track Endometriosis Tests Mean for You

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) is an organisation that lays out the best practice doctors within the NHS should adhere to. Up until now, the only way to diagnose endometriosis was with a laporoscopy. Painful abdominal surgery that takes months to recover from, in an already painful area of the body.

In the light of new technology, two non-invasive endometriosis tests are being included in draft NICE guidelines. They are on-the-spot tests based on biological markers in saliva are quick and can be carried out in a GP's office. The guidelines are only in a draft format, this means they will not be widely available, yet. It's incredibly difficult being ill and also having to advocate for yourself, so you have my sympathy that this adds another thing to your 'to do' list. But, if you haven't got a diagnosis, take the NICE draft guidelines to your next doctors appointment and ask for this test. It may take some time to become accessible across the UK, but demand forces change. The more people who do this test, the more quickly it's reliability can be tested for you and other patients on the waiting list for diagnosis.

Acupuncture and smoking moxa on the back

In the clinic, your diagnosis doesn't change what I do. Chinese medicine and the acupuncture prescription I choose is based on your precise symptom profile, not a Western Medical category. Endometriosis & Adenomyosis appears in different forms for different patients and there is no 'one size fits all' treatment. Things that may differ are: pain profiles, pain locations, digestive function, nausea, low grade fever, hot flushes, swelling, bloating, tiredness, exhaustion.

I will treat you where you are at and the new NICE draft guidelines will hopefully speed up diagnostic times so you have treatment options you can choose from. A decade is too long to wait for an answer.
